NATIONAL CAMPAIGN FOR DRAWING - BIG DRAW EVENT AT SUSSEX SCULPTURE STUDIOS 2008
On OCTOBER 18th we ran our 2nd Big Draw event in conjunction with Emily Ball Studios at Seawhites. The theme this year is 'Drawing from Life'. There was the opportunity to draw from life models at Emily's and take part in a huge colourful mono-print with us at Sussex Sculpture Studios. Visitors also enjoyed drawing themselves and during the day several self portraits were produced and on display. Enjoy the images on our Images of Events page and try to join us next October at this annual national event.
First Year Celebration Exhibition
To celebrate one year in operation we had an exhibition of work at 2by4Studios in Horsham at the end of August. It was very satisfying to see the high standard and originality of the work on display. Hard to believe that for some of the exhibitors the work on display was their first piece of sculpture!
Artists and Makers Open Studios
This was a big success! Despite the horrible weather and the Wimbledon men's final we still had a good number of visitors on the first weekend. It was great to see the great quantity and excellent quality of work that had been achieved this year by our studio users. Many thanks to all of them for contributing and helping to make such a varied and interesting exhibition.
The second weekend was different because we were fortunate to be able to run two events during our opening hours. The first on Saturday afternoon was a magical experience! Harry Potter illustrator Cliff Wright, has been working in the studio in the last few weeks to produce a cast from his sculpture of one of J.K. Rowling's mythical animals, the Hippogriff. On Saturday it was ready to emerge from the mould. So visitors were able to witness the birth of a baby hippogriff!! Look on our ' Images of events' page to see Cliff and Andrew taking the sculpture out of the mould. Cliff is taking the hippogriff on to Art in Action at Waterperry House near Oxford and then to the Edinburgh Festival in August where it will be on view with an exhibition of work by Cliff and five other artists.
The second event was completely different.Visitors were able to take part in a demonstration of calligraphy by Japanese artist Masashi. He also spoke about his work as a painter using traditional Japanese methods and described some of processes and material involved. Although Masashi uses traditional Japanese painting techniques, his work is modern, and this combination makes his work very beautiful; sometimes a rare thing in contemporary art! His interest in nature and Zen informs all his work. Using traditional black charcoal inks on absorbent Japanese papers to suggest landscapes Masashi uses these to construct screens, window shapes, and other traditional Japanese furniture. His colour imagery executed with overlays of pure natural pigments give his work a luminosity reminiscent of Turner.
Look on our 'Images of Events' page to see the action!
Big Draw October 13th 2007
Last year we took part in the big draw in conjunction with Emily Ball at her studio at Seawhites in Partridge Green. We experimented with using terracotta clay, along with other materials, to help create a huge drawing that ran the whole length of her studio. Great fun was had by all involved.
