Sculpture Courses and Workshops

Sussex Sculpture is pleased to be able to offer the following workshops and courses. Courses that are arranged around a life model run in consecutive six week blocks, where as all other courses are flexible and can be joined at any time of the year.

COURSES FROM SEPT 2010 - JUNE 2011

SCULPTURAL SHELLS 

3 DAY WORKSHOP 

Tutor:  Janine Creaye 

Cost:   £160 + materials 

Dates:  Once per term:

  Autumn Term – Sept 13 – 15

  Spring Term –  Jan  25 –  27 

Time:  10am – 4pm 

Class size:  8 

Explore shell forms of spiral conches, scallop forms, and 

slipper limpets in wire, plaster and cement. This can have 

the practical outcome of making items to use in the 

garden, or you can create pure sculptural forms with 

surface texture and pattern. The course will teach 

technical skills, but also allows time for each student to 

experiment with the subject in their own way.

 

NATURE IN GOTHIC WOOD CARVING 

4 DAY WORKSHOP 

Tutor:   Janine Creaye 

Cost:   £198 plus materials 

Dates:  Once per term:

  Autumn Term – Sept 27 –  30, 

  Spring Term – Feb 7 –  10 

Time:   10am –  4pm 

Class size:  8 

Look at how medieval wood carvers interpreted plant and 

animal forms – the tool patterns, quirky but strong motifs 

and the meaning behind them. You will then work out your 

own design in this style and carve a small panel in fine 

grained wood, taking the process through to stains and 

finishes.

 

MODELLING FROM LIFE - FIGURATIVE SCULPTURE 

Tutors:   Andrew Brown/Marji Talbot 

Cost:   £300 (12 weeks) Autumn and Spring Terms 

   £250 (10 weeks) Summer Term 

 Includes model fees 

Dates:    6 Weds or 6 Thurs each term 

  Autumn Term - Sept 8/9 to Dec 8/9 

  Spring Term - Jan 12/13 to Apr 6/7 

  Summer Term - May 4/5 to Jul 13/14 

Time:   2pm - 5pm 

Class Size:  7 

Enjoy working  from the life model to produce 1/3 size 

figures or smaller. Work can be fired or cast. Cast work 

requires a further booking on to a Casting course for a 

further six weeks.

 

ANIMAL SCULPTURE - MODEL AN OTTER IN CLAY 

Tutor:   Andrew Brown 

Cost:   £145 plus material and firing 

Dates:   Autumn Term 

  Sat, 1 full day – Nov 6 (10am –  4pm) 

  5 half days – Nov 13 - Dec 11 (10am – 1pm) 

Class Size:  7 

Students will spend a full day at Woods Mill Wild life Trust 

gathering information from a stuffed otter in the form of 

photos, sketches and small maquettes, followed by 5 

sessions at the studio working in clay to produce work 

suitable for firing. 


ANIMAL SCULPTURE 

Tutor:   Andrew Brown 

Cost:   £145 (plus materials and firing) 

Dates:   6 Saturdays per term:

  Spring Term - Mar 5 to Apr 9 

  Summer Term - May 7 to Jun 11

Time: 10am - 1pm

Class Size:  7 

Students will work from photographs, drawings and 

maquettes to produce an animal sculpture in clay suitable 

for firing. When possible, stuffed animals will be available 

for reference.

 

PORTRAIT HEAD IN CLAY 

Tutor:   Hazel Reeves SWA 

Cost:   £320 – includes model fees 

Dates:   6 Saturdays per term: 

  Autumn Term -  Oct 30, Nov 6, 20, 27, Dec 4, 11 

  Spring Term -  Mar 12, 19, 26, April 2,  9, 16 

  Summer Term -  May 7, 14, 21,  28, June 4, 11 

Times:   10am – 4pm 

Class Size:  7 

Why not join us as we explore portrait sculpture over six 

weeks? Work from life to create a lively portrait head. 

Suitable for all levels of experience. Hazel Reeves 

specialises in portrait sculpture. She is an elected 

member of the Society of Women Artists and exhibits with 

the Society of Portrait Sculptors.

 

GARDEN SCULPTURE 

Tutor:   Andrew Brown 

Cost:   £170 

Duration: 1 full weekend to model the ciment

  PLUS

  2 x 3hr sessions to produce the steel armature

  1⁄2 to 1 full day for finishing. 

Dates:   Modelling Weekends are as follows: 

  Autumn Term - Oct 16/17 

  Spring Term - Feb 19/20 

  Summer Term - Jun 24/25 

  PLEASE NOTE that students will need to book time 

  prior to the weekend to make the armature and then 

  book time after for finishing work. 

Times:   10am – 5pm 

Class Size:  4 

Join this very popular course to produce an original 

sculpture  for your garden based on your own design. 

Steel armatures will be produced using your drawings 

and/or maquettes for reference.  Enjoy two days of 

modelling in ciment fondu to complete the form, then one 

day finishing once the ciment is dry.

 

SOFT STONE CARVING 

Tutor:   Thea Taylor 

Cost:   £240 plus materials 

Dates:   10/12 Wednesdays per term

  Autumn - Sept 8 to Dec 8 

  Spring Term - Jan 12 to Apr 6 

  Summer Term - May 4 to Jul 13 

Times:  10am – 1pm 

Class Size: 8 

Enjoy learning to work intuitively in soft stone to produce 

imaginative work on a small scale. All practical aspects 

will be covered from use of tools to polishing and finishing 

work.

 

FREE FORM 

Tutors:   Andrew Brown/Marji Talbot 

Cost:   £120 per 6 x 3 hour session + materials 

Dates: 6 sessions (free choice of dates)

  Students must pre-book 6 sessions 

  with the studio at the beginning of 

  each half term. 

Free Form is for those students with who would like 

to work on individual project based work. Materials 

and methods available are clay modelling for 

casting or firing, wax modelling, and direct 

modelling in plaster, ciment fondu. 


CASTING 

Tutor:   Andrew Brown 

Cost:   £120  per 6 x 3 hour sessions + materials 

Dates:  6 sessions (free choice of dates)

  Students must pre-book 6 sessions 

  with the studio at the beginning of 

  each half term 

Learn how to cast your work in a variety of materials from 

plaster to resin and ciment fondu.

 

FINISHING DAYS 

Tutor:   Andrew Brown 

Cost:   £70 (includes materials) 

Dates: One Saturday per term

  Autumn Term - Nov 6 

  Spring Term - Mar 5 

  Summer Term - Jul 9 

Times:   10am –  5pm 

Class Size:  10 

Learn how to finish work using a variety of methods and 

materials. Students will need to bring their work along (up 

to 4 pieces). Work should be either a fired piece, or 

pieces made in plaster, ciment or resin.

 

TASTER WORKSHOPS 

Tutor:   Andrew Brown/Marji Talbot 

Cost:   £30 per 3 hour session 

Dates:   Students need to pre-book a time with the studio

and techniques that may lead you on to further sculptural
