Sussex Sculpture is pleased to be able to offer the following workshops and courses. Join us at the start of any term.
Brochure 2011-12
MODELLING FROM LIFE - FIGURATIVE
Tutors: Andrew Brown/Marji Talbot
Cost: £160 (6 weeks) Autumn and Spring Terms
£160 (6 weeks) Summer Term
Includes model fees and firing. Clay is available to purchase at the studio.
Dates: 6 Weds or 6 Thurs each half term.
Autumn Term: 1st half: Sept 7 or 8 to Oct 12 or 13. 2nd half: Nov 2 or 3 to Dec 7 or 8.
Spring Term: 1st half: Jan 11/12 to Feb 15/16. 2nd half: Feb 29 or Mar 1 to Apr 4/5.
Summer Term: May 2/3 to Jun 6/7
Time: 2pm - 5pm
Class Size: 8 max
Enjoy working from the life model to produce 1/3 size figures or smaller. Work can be fired or cast. Cast work requires booking on to a Casting course for a further six weeks.
ANIMAL SCULPTURE
Tutor: Andrew Brown
Cost: £170 (Includes all materials and firing)
Dates: 6 weeks – Sat 10am – 1pm
Autumn Term: Sat Sept 10 – Oct 15
Spring Term: Sat Jan 14 – Feb 18
Class Size: 7
Students will work from photographs, drawings and maquettes to produce an animal sculpture in clay suitable for firing. When possible, stuffed animals will be available for reference.
PORTRAIT HEAD IN CLAY
Tutor: Hazel Reeves SWA FRS Cost: £290 – includes model fees, firing and materials.
Dates: 5 Sat each term as follows:
Autumn Term: Nov 12, 26, Dec 3, 10, 17.
Spring Term: Mar 3, 10, 17, 24, 31.
Times: 10am – 4pm

Why not join us as we explore portrait sculpture over five weeks? Work from life to create a lively portrait head. Suitable for all levels of experience. Hazel Reeves specialises in portrait sculpture. She is an elected member of the Society of Women Artists and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
GARDEN SCULPTURE
Tutor: Andrew Brown
Cost: £200 (includes all materials)
Duration: Two 3hr sessions to produce the steel armature, 1 full weekend to model the ciment, 3hr session for finishing.
PLEASE NOTE that students will need to book time prior to the weekend to make the armature and then book time after for finishing work.
Dates: Modelling Weekends are as follows:
Autumn Term: Weekend of Oct 22/23
Spring Term: Weekend of Apr 21/22
Times: 10am – 5pm

Join this very popular course to produce an original sculpture for your garden based on your own design. Steel armatures will be produced using your drawings and/or maquettes for reference. Enjoy two days of modelling in ciment fondu to complete the form, then one half day finishing once the ciment has cured.
FREE FORM
Tutors: Andrew Brown/Marji Talbot
Cost: £120 per 6 x 3 hr session plus materials
Dates: Students must pre-book 6 sessions with the studio at the beginning of each half term.
Free Form is for those students with who would like to work on individual project based work. Materials and methods available are clay modelling for casting or firing, wax modelling, and direct modelling in plaster and ciment fondu.
WOOD CARVING
Tutor: Claire Morris
Cost:£175 per 6sessions including materials and use of basic tools.
Day: Thursdays 10am -1pm
Autumn Term: Nov 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec 1, 8.
Spring Term: March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5.
Class Size: 8
The aim of this course is to enable students to learn the basic principles and techniques of woodcarving. By the end of the course students should be able to:
-recognize and apply good carving design.
-select and use correctly a range of carving tools and equipment.
-Apply a variety of carving techniques.
-Appreciate the qualities and application of various hardwoods.
-Be involved in the critical assessment of their own and others work.
CASTING
Tutor: Andrew Brown
Cost: £120 per 6 x 3 hr sessions plus materials
Dates: Students must pre-book 6 sessions with the studio at the beginning of each half term
Learn how to cast your work in a variety of materials from plaster to resin and ciment fondu.
FINISHING DAYS
Tutor: Andrew Brown
Cost: £50 (includes materials) per day
Dates: Saturdays Dec 10, Mar 5, May 5
Times: 10am – 5pm
Class Size: 10
Learn how to finish work using a variety of methods and materials. Students will need to bring their work along (up to 4 pieces). Work should be either a fired piece, or pieces made in plaster, ciment or resin.
TASTER WORKSHOPS

Cost: £30 per 3 hour session
Dates: Students need to pre-book a time with the studio
Not sure if sculpture is for you? Try joining us for an afternoon and enjoy learning how to build forms in clay ready for firing. Have fun exploring a variety of materials and techniques that may lead you on to further sculptural work. Contact us to arrange a time that suits you.

Enjoy learning to work intuitively in soft stone to produce imaginative work on a small scale. All practical aspects will be covered from use of tools to polishing and finishing work.
Hello…..I am interested in joining the modelling from life classes for the summer 2011 term…....is this class likely to run and if so how do I enrol…..the Thursdays would be best for me…....
